9 Month Checkup

(He had been crying a lil bit. Bless it!)

We had Hudson's 9 month checkup on Friday and it went great! It was supposed to be a shot-free visit, but he had to have the second part of his flu shot. :( There were a few tears but they didn't last long. The doctor was very pleased with how he's growing. He weighs 20lbs 1 oz (I expected more) and is 29 1/4 inches tall!! He's right on track, physically and developmentally and I am so thankful for that! The doc has ok'd whole milk at 11 months and I'm really hoping I can make the breastmilk last another 6 or so weeks until then!! If I don't have to do formula at all that'd be super fantastic!

It's hard to believe the next time we go back will be for his ONE YEAR checkup! Wha???? That's just craziness. Pure craziness. It's also craziness to think that I have a first birthday party to start thinking about soon. :(

I'm thankful little dude is healthy, happy, and growing right on track. That's really all that matters to a mommy. I feel like this month is going by so fast. I'll be typing his 10 month (DOUBLE DIGITS!!!) post in less than 2 weeks! Slow down, time!

The Latest.

I haven't been posting much lately because there hasn't been too much going on. I'm still dealing with the loss of my sweet grandfather and it's getting a little better every day, but he's still missed so much! I think about him constantly. Hudson and I haven't been up to very much during the days, just the same ol' same ol'. He's just cruising, crawling, and I'm just waiting for him to let go and walk independently any day now. Yesterday, he stood alone for at least 10 seconds...at least. I was just standing there in shock! I thought he might try to walk but he just stood there. He was very steady, too....didn't shake, wobble, or anything the whole time. Other than that, he's just crawling like crazy, getting into EVERYTHING, and eating more and more finger foods. (he loves cheerios, cheese, grapes, strawberries and green beans are iffy, mashed potatoes, although those are a rarity, watermelon, and a few others)

One thing that is going on is the fact that we are moving. Yes, moving...again...less than a year after our last move. As most of you know, we moved up to Huntsville for a job opportunity for Joseph that he couldn't pass up. It happened rather quickly so we didn't really have a lot of time to look for a house. We knew we wanted to rent because we're not prepared to carry 2 mortgages (we still own our house in Alabaster) and we didn't want to commit to a house, not knowing the area very well and where we wanted to ultimately end up. SO, we decided to look for another house that is better for us (more convenient location, a little smaller and closer to civilization, ha!). Seriously, our current home is pretty far out in the country, which I have a love-hate relationship with, and is about 3300 sq ft!!! Too big for us right now...and for this lady to keep clean. The new home is in the Owens Cross Roads area of Huntsville and will save at least 35 minutes for our families from Gadsden, and is like 3 minutes from Publix and 10 minutes from Target!! That's huge for me. Right now, it takes us about 20-25 minutes to get to Target, as well as Hudson's doctor, and that's just unacceptable. It's impossible to take a quick trip anywhere and that gets mighty old. Anyway, sorry to ramble so much....this move will be really good for us and I hope to stay here for a couple of years then either find us a nice house to buy, or some nice land to build! I really want to build! We'll see how that goes. We're moving Friday. Yes, Friday. That's 3 days. We've hired movers, of course, and are just about packed up so hopefully we'll be ready and the move will go smoothly. As smoothly as it can go with a 9.5 month old. As long as he handles it OK, that's all that matters. I'm ready to get it over with!

And last but not least....a couple of pictures from the last few days.

We stayed at a hotel while we were Gadsden last week and Hudson LOVED the big mirrored closet. He kept playing with "the baby in the mirror". :-)

He loves this zebra bike so much! His grandmother & grandfather Puckett got it for him and he plays with it all. the. time. We pull him on it sometimes(hence the belt around its neck, ha!), but a lot of times he'd just rather walk with it. ;)

I hope you're having a great week! :)

Progress Thus Far...

As of this morning, I am down 20 pounds!! I can't believe it! I am so excited!!
A few people have requested some pics, but like I said, I didn't think to take actual "before" pics. SO, I found a couple pics we had made at the beach back in August, about 6 months ago. Believe it or not, that was pretty much the same weight I started at several weeks ago. I lost 30 of the FORTY-FIVE pounds I gained during pregnancy in less than 2 weeks and lost a few more over a couple more weeks, then pretty much remained stagnant for MONTHS! (won't let that happen next time...which is a long way away!)
So, here are the "before" pics....

And here are some pics Joseph took today, 20 pounds later!

The pocket on the shirt doesn't really help, I know.

I know you can't get the full effect, because I cut my head off(trust me, you'd thank me if you saw me without my face on! HA!). BUT, I hope you can at least tell a little difference. You can see the difference in my face, but like I said, you ain't seeing it without makeup. ;-)

I will definitely take more pics when I hit my goal, which I've changed to at least 15 more pounds. After I hit the goal, I really want to start working out and toning up! I'm just so glad to be fitting into clothes I haven't been able to wear in a LONG time! I feel so much better...physically, mentally, all of it. I'm actually looking forward to warmer weather this year!! :)

I hope y'all have a great weekend.

Saying Goodbye

7 1/2 months ago, we lost my precious grandmother, Rae. She battled Alzheimer's for several years and it took its toll on her rather quickly, especially over the last few months of her life. She passed away peacefully in her sleep in their home. The past several months have been difficult, sad, and definitely an adjustment. Yesterday, we had to say goodbye to her loving husband, my amazing grandfather, Ralph Thomas Machen, Sr.(Hudson was named after him) This was something we were not at all prepared for. He held on for several months, spending time with friends, family, and his new great-grandson, Hudson. All of these things kept him going for a while, but his time came and he was ready to be home with his sweet wife.

It all began January 3rd when he passed out in his apartment. Over the almost month he was in the hospital, they discovered that his heart (which was bad to begin with...he had congestive heart failure) was not working properly. He kept having v-tach and had to have a pace-maker and artificial defibrillator inserted. This did not fix the problem, because he had several bad spots in his heart, which needed to be fixed with ablation. He ultimately ended up at UAB for this and they were uncertain if the procedure could be done due to his thin blood.(he was on blood thinners because he was prone to clots) He crashed early one morning last week and they really had no choice but to try it. The doctor was able to do a couple of spots before his heart started bleeding. Once they got this under control they stopped and this is where things went south. My parents were given a best-case scenario(he wakes up, gains consciousness, and starts improving) and a worse-case scenario. They said he followed the worst-case scenario to a T. He never fully regained consciousness, but he could respond to you with simple words, and his organs began shutting down, starting with his kidneys, which never had any output. His heart just gave out, and other things started to also. My parents were with him on Saturday, January 28th when he left this life and joined his wife and family who have gone before him. They were both holding his hands, telling him they love him, and he was able to look at my dad and tell him he loves him before he went. I am so glad they were there with him and he did not go alone. All I can think about is how I didn't get to see him one last time or say goodbye. That's made all of this even harder than it already is. See, Joseph, Hudson, and I were going down the next day to see him. The next day!!! If only we'd gone down that day. That's all I can think about. I know everything happens the way it's supposed to and for a reason, but what I wouldn't give to have been able to be there!

I miss him. I miss him so much it hurts and I want him back. I want to talk to him, hear him tell jokes, sing all of his favorite songs to Hudson. The past two days have been the hardest so far. There have been a lot of breakdowns and I'm sure they're not over. Something about getting home, without my family around me anymore just sent me over the edge last night and I wasn't sure the breakdowns would ever stop. I just kept having to think about the good times and the fact that we will be reunited again someday. And although I know I'll see him again one day, and it's selfish of me to want him back here when he's in such a beautiful place now, I do. I can't help but want him back. I know he knew I loved him, but I need to tell him one last time. I need more time with him. I can't imagine a world without my beloved Fatdaddy in it, and I'm not sure how we'll make it without him here. This man taught me so much. I have SO many incredible memories to hold onto. The fondest memories I have of him include the many, many days we spent fishing when they lived on the river, he taught me how to cast the line, be patient and quiet, and when you feel the first little tug be ready to reel in! He didn't teach me to bait my hook, though....that was one thing I would never do. It grossed me out too much...still does to this day. But he didn't mind doing that part for me. He was a good baiter. When we were done fishing, we'd bring the fish back to the house and I'd sit on the ledge outside and watch as he scaled them. I thought it was pretty cool to watch, although I'd never do it, nor would he have let me handle that knife anyway. We always had great conversations out there together. He was always teaching me something. And if there's anybody in the world to learn from, he's the man. He was the smartest, most eloquent person I've ever known. He loved learning. Even at 88 years old, he was always striving to learn something new. He loved people and never met a stranger. And he loved to laugh and make others laugh. If you were around him, you were laughing. I find myself thinking back to times of laughter (which were a LOT) when I feel like breaking down.
Another favorite memory is a more recent one. I will never forget how his face lit up every time he saw his precious great-grandson...how he loved to hold him, sing to him, see him smile, and listen to his "talking". I am so incredibly thankful that he got to know and love Hudson, and boy did he love him! He talked about him all the time, from what I hear. I was so hoping they'd have a few more years together, but I am grateful for the time they did have. I have so many awesome stories to tell Hudson one day.

Here's an example of the sweetness of which I speak....

I can hear him singing that song up there right now.

My Fatdaddy was an incredible man and I am so blessed to have known and loved him. My dad gave his eulogy yesterday and did an amazing job. It was one that I know would have made his father proud and was just what he wanted. It has been devastating for him to lose both of his parents in such a short time, but he knows they are together again and that makes him smile.

This last picture is how I want to remember him....holding the great-grandson he came to love so much, in such a short amount of time. I miss this man so much, but I know one day I'll see him again. Until then, I'll hold on to the sweet memories.

I love you so much, Fatdaddy, and I will see you again!! Give RaeRae a big hug and kiss for me!

Weight Loss Update

I thought I'd give you a quick update on how my "diet" is going.

I've been doing this routine now for about 6.5 weeks or so, I think....I've kinda lost track, it could be 7. I'm not sure. :-) At any rate, I'm doing really well so far. I am down almost 17 pounds, under my pre-pregnancy weight, can fit back into all of my regular clothes and some clothes are even too big now! I'm actually fitting into some pants I didn't fit into a good while before getting pregnant. Woo hoo!! That is the BEST feeling! I'm almost 13 pounds away from my original goal, but I am going to revise my goal and go for another 5-10 pounds after that. I was in just about the best shape of my life when I got married a little over 5 years ago, and that is where I want to be again. I also want to take up running again and tone up.

I'm pretty proud of myself and I knew if I just committed to it, I'd make it happen. I'm not gonna lie, I'd KILL for a big bacon cheeseburger right now! I plan on rewarding myself with one, but not until I hit my original goal..so in about 13 more pounds. Of course, I'll get right back on track after that burger, but I do think it's important to reward yourself every now and then so you don't go out on a binge and completely ruin all your hard work. I also need to make sure I drink some Pepto or something beforehand because I can only imagine what that burger will do to my stomach. Eeek! It's not used to stuff like that anymore. ;-) I wish I had thought to take a "before" picture back when I started, but I totally forgot. I will put up a picture of me around the time I started, along with an "after" picture when it's all said and done, to compare.

And I can't leave without showing you this adorable video we made last night of Hudson and Bryant (our Boxer). It's hilarious!

Y'all have a great Thursday!
